A lot of roasting and a little boasting

Food Stories Winner for July, 2012

First, a little boasting.  We were notified on Friday that our blog was the July winner of “Food Stories Award for Excellence in Story Telling“. Back in May, 2012, I wrote a blog post that we had been nominated by Pop the Bubbly for the Illuminating Blogger Award.  I was quite excited (so was Yes!Chef!) because this award is not just about blogging recipes or showing pretty pictures of food.  It is about telling stories and not necessarily just about food.  I am all about telling stories…Just ask my children.

I checked out the competition several times since I was nominated, and they are a great group of bloggers.  In fact, I spent quite a bit of time perusing some of the entries.  But then, life got in the way and I kind of forgot about it until we got the notification on Friday morning that we had won.  Now, I can say:  Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!  Hazaah!

Out of Africa or The Healing Power of a Simple Chicken

My daughter (right) and a good friend who adventured with her and an elephant

I have been missing the last couple of weeks, but I’ve had very good reasons.  First my daughter returned from Africa.  She had been there for a little over 5 months working in a Day Home (of sorts) for Street Boys.

You can’t “beet” the Farmers Market

Last Saturday I stopped by the Placerville Farmers Market for the first time this year.  I was amazed at all the fresh fruits and veggies that were available this early in the season.  I was also surprised about the amount of people that were there until I remembered that the Wagon Train was in town for their annual parade.  I did not stick around for that, because it gets kind of crazy in town, but it is certainly an interesting and fun event that’s been around a very long time.

A Simple Saturday Night Meal or Barbecue Chicken and Fried Baby Artichokes

Barbecue Chicken, roasted asparagus, fried baby artichokes with Greek Yogurt dip and red grapes

It had been a long day of work-outside-in-the-yard for Y!C! on Saturday. We ordered some useful-yet-decorative cement blocks for the yard, so Y!C! and my youngest son hauled those around to make our yard look a bit more tidy.

Roasted Chile-Lime Chicken or He Limes Me, He Limes Me Not

Roasted Chile-Lime Chicken with Garlic Lime Corn

Well, we are still in Lake Tahoe and yesterday the weather started to improve. It was still petty cool, but the sun was out more than it was behind the clouds. Our morning walk around the neighborhood was brisk but beautiful.

Julia’s Coq au Vin or Peasant Food is Happy Food

Romantic Coq Au Vin

So, here is the finished product…Julia Child’s Coq Au Vin – Chicken with Wine and pearl onions and tomatoes and mushrooms and wonderful wine. Yes!Chef! also made roasted potatoes and simple buttery broccoli.  We love chicken around the Schmautzhaus and we also love slow food, so this was the perfect food for Yes!Chef to cook.  He started making it in the morning, before the chickens were up .

Chicken warily eyes me.
