First, a little boasting. We were notified on Friday that our blog was the July winner of “Food Stories Award for Excellence in Story Telling“. Back in May, 2012, I wrote a blog post that we had been nominated by Pop the Bubbly for the Illuminating Blogger Award. I was quite excited (so was Yes!Chef!) because this award is not just about blogging recipes or showing pretty pictures of food. It is about telling stories and not necessarily just about food. I am all about telling stories…Just ask my children.

I checked out the competition several times since I was nominated, and they are a great group of bloggers. In fact, I spent quite a bit of time perusing some of the entries. But then, life got in the way and I kind of forgot about it until we got the notification on Friday morning that we had won. Now, I can say: Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner! Hazaah!

No cook. No machine. No Scream. Strawberry Ice Cream.

Well, it continues to be hot here in the mid-Sierras. Yesterday it was 100 degrees outside at the 3200 foot elevation mark (where we live). That doesn’t happen very often and because of that, we don’t have air-conditioning in the Schmautzhaus. We have a whole house fan that cools things down at night and we have fans in all the rooms, but by around 3:00 the only thing the fans do is circulate the warm air. Looks like today is going to be more of the same. I have a photo shoot in Sacramento today or I would be headed to Tahoe. Monday Obie T. and I are going for sure.

Celebrate National Watermelon Day with Watermelon Gazpacho and homemade Creme Fraiche

Well, today is National Watermelon Day. What a coincidence that I happened to make Watermelon Gazpacho yesterday and it is perfectly chilled and ready to eat tonight. It’s quite warm here in the Sierras, so maybe it will help cool us off.

Cool Watermelon Mojitos and Spicy-Sweet Glazed Shrimp on the Bar-B; or It’s time to celebrate again!

The members of the Schmautzhaus have gotten together again for some summer celebrating. This time we were celebrating two birthdays for the price of one, so to speak. Two birthdays were exactly a week apart, so we all got together yet again.

Strawberry Margaritas, grilled burgers and baked, stuffed potatoes or Thanks, Honey, I needed that.

Sunday I had a fun photo shoot in the little town of Galt, CA, in a great bar called Brewsters Bar and Grill. I took my youngest son with me because he has a little interest in modeling and a great interest in hanging around pretty girls. So, we got up early and drove down to Galt, spent the day photographing/modeling and drove back that afternoon.
