The World’s Best Cookie goes Christmas

Do you remember your favorite childhood Holiday Christmas cookie?  I have a couple of favorites, one of which is The World’s Best Cookie. Yes, that is the name of the cookie.  I don’t know if it really is the world’s best cookie, but it is one of my favorites.

My mom used to make these Cookies for Christmas but I haven’t made them since she passed away in 1998 because I didn’t have the recipe.  I figured the recipe would be in my mom’s recipe binder, so I scoured thru her recipe binder and I found the original copy of her recipe.  You will note that her recipes are on old computer print outs.  (She had the recipe for quite some time written on the back of an envelope and then she went “computer age” and made her binder.)  She noted:  “Given to me by Mrs. Glenn”. Mrs. Glenn was a neighbor of my grandmother’s and the whole neighborhood acknowledged that Mrs. Glenn was probably the best cook in the neighborhood. If you were lucky enough to get ahold of a recipe by Mrs. Glenn, you knew it was a good one.  I’m not sure if Mrs. Glenn developed this recipe or just passed it along because it was tasty.

This was my mom’s recipe binder. All recipes were filed in alphabetical order rather than according to category, which makes her recipes a little difficult to find if you don’t know the name.  I probably should organize them…someday.

I couldn’t remember the name of these cookie and it probably would have taken me forever to finally get to the “W’s” for World’s Best Cookies, but luckily she had some of her favorite recipes loose in the back of the book.  This was one of those recipes.

I like these cookies because they are simple, crunchy, a little chewy, they last a long time and they are quite tasty.  The cornflakes add a really nice crunch and texture.  However, these cookies are not called the World’s Prettiest Cookies, so Edmond and Elvis decided they should hop in the picture to show you how much they love them and you will not notice that they are not the prettiest.

Another good thing about these cookies is that the shelf life is quite long.  Just keep them wrapped or in a plastic bag and they will hold for a week or longer (if you can keep everyone from eating them all.)

Here’s the recipe:

World’s Best Cookie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup crushed cornflakes
  • 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (I think pecans taste best)
  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F
  2. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy
  3. Add egg, mixing well.  Then add oil, mixing well.
  4. Add oats, cornflakes, coconut and nuts.  Mix well with a spatula or large spoon
  5. Mix in remaining ingredients and mix until well mixed.
  6. Form batter into small walnut-size balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  7. Smash each ball with a fork dipped in water.
  8. Bake for 12-14 minutes until edges are browned.
  9. Let rest on baking sheet for about 5 minutes and then remove to wire rack to continue cooling.
  10. Pour a glass of milk or some hot chocolate and eat 2 (they are small).

Edmond helped with the cookies for a while and actually he didn’t get into too much trouble.

But, while the first batch was cooking, he got himself involved in several situations.  The first one being a sing-a-long with some of his relatives.

However, a little kerfuffle kicked up when one of Edmond’s brother’s criticized a second cousin.  I think I heard him say that he couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.

The challenge was taken up, I saw Edmond dash in to the pantry and grab a bag of marshmallows and the snowball fight was on.

And he hits his off-key cousin right in the kisser…

After that it was a free-for-all and I told them to take it outside.

After that, there was much laughter and gaiety because Elves don’t hold grudges and they truly love their family.

Edmond was happy to share the cookies because he said a good snowball fight works up the appetite.  Yes!Chef! has given these cookies his seal of approval and says that he doesn’t make cookies, but if he did, it would be this recipe.

Cookies for all.

  1. This is a great recipe despite the fact that it doesn’t involve chocolate! I’ve kept her recipe all these years, and put it into the kids’ recipe books I made a few years ago. I still have some of her dot-matrixed printed recipes in a binder too. She was really into her recipe program on her computer. It was cool how she and your dad were into computers when everyone else was “gee…I don’t know about these things. I don’t think they’ll catch on.” LOL

    1. I was thinking the same thing as I was writing this post. My mom is the one that made me get my first computer and taught me how to use it when you had to use computer type language. You know, I think you could probably add chocolate chips or chunks to this recipe and it would be great.

  2. Very playful elves! 🙂 And how lovely to have your mother’s recipes. I think I have a few of those early computer generated ones myself. When computer’s were fairly new I think I even had a program that helped format the recipes. I thought it was so wonderful. Now they look so dated. The cookie recipe sounds like a good one. I like that that they keep for a little bit. I am intrigued with the cornflakes! I must try them. 🙂

  3. Reading this post was so nostalgic for me, my grandma and I used to make a big plate of cookie varieties every Christmas. It’s so meaningful to re-use family invented recipes, and this one looks especially delicious. Breakfast-cereal in cookies for the win 🙂
